New Online Store

I opened a new online Shootin' Ugli store at Cafe Press with some artwork I did. My youngest daughter is the real artist and I'm hoping to get her inspired to do some cool designs for me.

Please have a look and see what you think. I think it's a good first effort with more to come. Suggestions are welcome!

Happy Anniversary Sweety

Kari and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary yesterday. I love her dearly and am pumped that she and I share a love for each other and shooting together.

Anyway, we went out to Chili's last night. She had a salad and I had a bacon cheese burger cooked medium. (Any burger aficionado knows the importance of this.) I was impressed that they actually cooked it right. (Woot!) I got a Coor's Lite and Kari had a margarita (check out my recipe) and we raised our glasses...

ME: Here's to our 25th anniversary (clink)
ME: You know on our first anniversary we got all dressed up and went out to the House of Kobe (which was unfortunately an awful experience). I wore a jacket and tie. You wore a dress. Now we're here wearing t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops. I think we're comfortable with each other.
KARI: No...we've just gotten lazy. (clink)

Lazy? Hardly, but I'm not into pretense, pomp and appearances as I once was. (I'm as pretty as I'm ever going to get.) I'm into sincerity and authenticity. I clean up as well as anyone, but in the summer, t-shirt and flip-flops is genuinely us.

Happy 25th Anniversary Kitten! Love you lots and I just bought some ammo on sale!

Speaking of ammo, for a limited time Winchester AA shells are available with a $2.00 per box mail-in rebate (with a 10 box minimum purchase). I just picked up a case of 10 boxes from JR Shooting Sports in Aurora, IL. After the rebate the AA shells will cost only about $0.01 per shell more than the Winchester Universal target loads I usually pick up at Walmart. Of course I need to be sure to send in the rebate. See your dealer and the rebate form (at the dealer) for details.

One thing to ask the folks at JR Shooting Sports...would you please stop following me around?! It's creeping me out!

H&R Pardner

I need to say one thing...that H&R Pardner is the "awesomest" (I know that's not a word) shotgun I ever bought, with an ejector, for $109 bucks NIB. The model I bought has a fixed modified choke and Kari loves it.

H&R Pardner Single-shot Shotgun
I did need to invest in a recoil pad for it at $20, making it the "awesomest" $129 shotgun I ever bought. That made it shoot-able for Kari. Prior to that I put 100 rounds through it without a recoil pad and regretted it for a week. On the Internet I had read how that thing kicks, and it did! Subduing it's fury with a recoil pad was a good move for Kari and me.

Fun as a day is long, this 100 year old design is cheap and easy to shoot. Never a FTF and only occasionally sticky shells (when they're hot), if you're looking for a bargain single-shot shotgun, the H&R Pardner is worth a look.

Revisiting Ladies Shooting Shirts...Again

My daughter, Brit, came shooting with Kari and I over the weekend. Brit started out at the archery range and, once she lost most of her arrows, then moved over to the trap range. (We're new to archery and didn't bring our own target with. Most of the arrows went through the backstop and into the field.)

Brit decided to try her hand at shooting again, this time with proper Winchester Universal target rounds and not the low noise, low recoil Winchester AA rounds (which are more expensive than they should be at Gander Mountain). Now that we know she's left-eye dominant, she positioned herself for her first with my wife's H&R Pardner (single-shot, not the pump).

Under the watchful eyes of a group of a group of young men next to us (funny how that works, girls are such a novelty on the range), the following took place:
ME: "Alright Brit, it's going to go straight up the middle."
BRIT: "Okay...PULL!"
TRAP: "Sproing!"
GUN: "Blam!"
CLAY: "Aahhhhhhhh!"
BRIT: "Ow-waa! That hurt...but it was cool."
KARI: "It's fun when you hit stuff, isn't it?"
BRIT: "Yep, let's do it again!"
...and so we did. Now my daughter wants to shoot too.

Brit is just a little thing at 5' 1" and the gun doesn't fit her well, but she's as tough as nails and shot until her shoulder got too sore. I'm sure the poor fit contributed to the soreness, but just as much was the fact that she wasn't wearing a shooting shirt like Kari. Brit had a bruise developing and Kari was fine. Same gun, different shirts. Kari shot until her arms were tired. Brit shot until her shoulder became too sore.

I think I may have come upon a new source of custom shooting shirts for a reasonable price. I'm going to check it out and if it looks good, I'll make a recommendation.

Guys, get your lady a good shooting shirt! You and she won't regret it...and she'll look good too.

Clay Targets at Gander Mountain

Hey! Just a quick tip on clay targets. Kari and I were at Gander Mountain over the weekend picking up some Hoppes No. 9 and saw that they have clay targets on sale. They are Champions, 135 count for $9.99.

If you've been following my blog you'll know that White Flyers are my favorite, but a deal's a deal. Did I pick any up? Not yet...I still have a couple of boxes of White Flyers in my garage.
